Broadcasting Information in a Simple and Effective Way

What I love the most about technology is its ability to make things faster, better and more efficient. As a network manager and administrator at the Wyoming Military Department, I try to focus on these three things each day to give my customers the technology they need to make their jobs easier.

The Wyoming Military Department works both locally and remotely to support the National Guard, the National Guard Youth programs, and Veteran programs. The agency has three divisions, and even though we're in the same building, each division has its own computer network. We created a website to help share information internally and externally, but because the site was hosted on a federal network, very few staff members had access to update information. Even worse, for the few who could access the site, the software was difficult to learn and understand.

Google Sites changed all of this for us. We created a public website with Google Sites which allowed us to publish up-to-date information from all of our divisions at any time. Now, even though we're still on separate networks, staff members in each of the three divisions are able to access the site and make changes to their sections. Google Sites is so easy to use that anyone on the staff can do it with nominal training for each individual. That means changes to the site can be made immediately.

We are now looking at using Google Sites to create an internal website as well where we can broadcast information that is imperative to all three divisions including contact information, news, announcements, regulations, and more. Additionally, we're looking at Google Calendars to coordinate schedules among the divisions. It's an exciting time. We've managed to find tools that will allow our agency to communicate in ways that weren't possible before.
